About the Artist: Chris Dewees earned a Ph.D. in Ecology at U.C.
Davis. Dewees served as marine fisheries specialist at Davis from
1972 through 2007 where he acted as a link between the University of
California and the state's commercial and recreational fishing
industries. His research focus is on marine fisheries
management.
Dewees says, "My job as well as my passion for recreational
fishing brings me in contact with a lot of fish to print."
"My gyotaku (fish printing) style is traditional and delicate.
I like to emphasize the structure and movement of the fish and
shellfish. In recent years I have been doing more indirect printing
which allows me to gain more control of color and even finer detail.
Every type of fish is unique and requires a different
approach."

5-6 August 2008 (Tuesday and Wednesday)
Center for Life Enrichment
Highlands, NC
This is a 12-hour introduction (two-day) to the art of nature
printing with an etching press.
Explore
the process of creating monotype (one-of-a-kind) prints on paper
using natural objects such as leaves, flowers, feathers, and
grasses. You will learn
general printmaking techniques using an etching press, and the
basics of nature printing. We will follow the John Fass method of
making repetitive prints from a single inked plate.
This technique allows for shadow and depth and the additional
of other additional inked objects in a unique layering process.
Incorporating the elements of design we will also create
background textures on an inked surface with the use of lichens,
eggshells, cheesecloth, and other natural items. The possibilities
range from simple botanicals to complex layered images.

Sarasota School Board,
Sarasota, FL
The Art of the Fish Print (Gyotaku ) (1 session) Gyotaku, or
literally fish (gyo) rubbings (taku) is an oriental art form which
uses an actual fish to create an ink image. Gyotaku originated in
Japan in the mid 1800’s as a way for anglers to record the
characteristics and size of their catch. This record is so accurate
that prints have been used in present day Japan to determine the
winner of fishing contests. In the western world, gyotaku has been
embraced by artists and designers as a unique art medium. The
instructor guarantees that when you leave this workshop, you will
have a picture fit for matting and framing. You may bring your
lunch.
