    Propagating Eden features books and prints from the mid-18th century to the present, and includes important scientific botanical treatises illustrated with nature-printed specimens, as well as works by 20th-century and contemporary artists who have mined the potential of natural forms. Among the works on view are some extraordinary examples of 18th and 19th-century nature prints, including a full sheet of nature-printed American currency by Benjamin Franklin from 1779, and a delicate 19th-century botanical illustration by printer and inventor Alois Auer.

August  2010

  • 5 day workshop on plant printing on paper and cloth 
    with John Doughty (NPS member)
    to be held in Ripley, WV USA

     

    22 – 27 August, 2010

    Two days will be devoted to prints made on paper and two days will be devoted to prints on clothing. Flower pounding will be used for one evening session. The last half day covers various subjects including matting and framing of prints. No previous experience is needed. Classes limited to 12 students each. John brings lots of unusual plants from his own garden that are not usually available. 

    The cost is $487.00 for all meals and lodging in a motel like setting with room service. The program starts with supper and orientation on Sunday and ends after lunch on Friday. 

    There will be a $35.00 studio fee to cover all paper, inks, paints and unbleached muslin cloth. John also provides most of the plant materials including some rare and unusual plants from his own garden. Participants need to bring any clothing or other cloth items they wish to print. 

    The workshop is part of Exploritas and is open to anyone 21 years or older. Exploritas is located at the Cedar Lakes Conference Center located in Ripley, West Virginia, USA.  Program Number is 5118RJ (direct link to program page)

    NPS Member
    Rachel Ramirez has been asked to prepare a small exhibition of gyotaku prints (including direct/indirect/transfer method and the tools and materials used to make these images) for a celebration of Japanese culture in Porto, Portugal during November 2010.
